Padmodaya School

Padmodaya Secondary School is to be found in Ramshah Path, near the Singha Durbar, on the way to Bhrikuti Mandap, at the heart of Kathmandu Metropolitan City,28. It was established in BS 2003 Phalgun 29 (February 1946) before dawn of democracy in Nepal. During the Rana Regime (1846-1950), it was not trouble-free to open public school. However, a faction of erudite persons namely, Ishwar Raj Aryal, Anand Prasad Dhungana, Jhanka Bahadur Shrestha, Prem Bahadur Kansakar, Krishna Bahadur Manandhar, Ratnaman Maske and Gauri Prasad Rajbhandari mutually attempted many more times for the establishment of school and finally they succeed to establish a public high school with consent of DEO and coined name “Padmodaya High School”. The word “Padmodaya” refers to the name of then Prime Minister of Nepal “Padma Shamsher Jung Bahadur Rana”, the father of schools who not only gave consent to open public school but also laid foundation stone for construction of school building and provided essential donations. The school was patronized by Kamala, the wife of Padma Shamsher and the school building is being publicly called Kamala Bhavana since that time. For the commemoration to Kamala, inter-school Kamala essay writing competition is continuously being organized from the establishment of the school. The main school building was constructed in BS 2010 (1953) which looks like buildings constructed by Ranas such as Singha Durbar, Babar Mahal and Keshar Mahal. Initially, it was established to educate only boys but interestingly, the school started to enroll girls since BS 2045 (1988). The students of this school started to appear SLC exam since BS 2004 (1947) and the number of first batch SLC graduate students were ten whereas former Prime Ministers Surya Bahadur Thapa was the second batch SLC graduate student of this school.

The word “Padmodaya” refers to the name of then Prime Minister of Nepal Padma Shamsher Jung Bahadur Rana .
